The two forms of side-walk surfing are completely different. There is even a debate about which is better or more fun.
We know At Hamboards, I couldn’t get away from this “Longboard vs. Skateboard” dispute, and I wanted to make an argument on this topic and settle the dispute.
You must know the main differences and advantages if you are wondering which to choose. Let’s take a look.
The origin of skateboards and longboards
You know mostly people know the history of skateboarding began in the 50s as a by-product of surfing. A group of surfers wanted to make the most of the flat day, so they built the first generation of skateboards with wheels on wooden boards.
Of course, the first skateboard was far from the present one, but it has been completed in its present form over the years.
Longboards have since appeared and have become popular in recent decades.
Skateboards could not fully recreate the surfing feeling because their design did not get close to the actual surfboard.
Longboards vs Skateboards We know that in the 1990s, longboard culture exploded on the scene, but this was not a trend. The sea surfers and snowboarders joined hands to experience the real sense of surfing on land.
They began to attach roller skate wheels to the board and gradually began to shape the current longboard. By installing a flexible and soft wheel, the surfboard’s original model remains the same so that it can reproduce the feeling of surfing.
The longboards were much shorter than the surfboards, but the design was almost identical.
Longboards have only started to become popular because they are versatile in shape and size and can be used in a variety of terrains. Click here
What do you think is the biggest difference between long and skateboarding?
It may be difficult to tell the difference if you don’t know about skateboarding and longboarding. Believe it or not, both boards have very different uses. Do you want to shred with a half pipe or fly downhill? Let’s explore the differences between skateboarding and longboarding to settle the dispute.
5 Differences Between Longboard and Skateboard
Here are the main differences between long and skateboarding:
1. Shape and Size
When you line up your longboard and skateboard, you’ll notice that the longboard’s nose and tail are flat. The nose and tail of the skateboard curve to make it easier to trick and flip.
Naturally, the longboards are long. The average skateboard is around 36 inches, while the longboard is 59 inches. Longboards also have a small size of 28 inches. If you’re stumbling on length, remember that the decisive difference between them is that the longboards are flat, and the skateboards are curved. In other words, if you see a flat, shortboard, it is probably a short longboard.
2. Deck Flexibility
For beginner skaters, the deck is the base of the board. If the purpose is to master new tricks, the board is thinner; that is, it is better to have flexibility. Flex is the hardness of the board. If you don’t want to make a mellow cruise, you’d better not make the flex too soft. Flex is soft or medium for tricks, giving you a sense of stability and a spring-like feel to make jumps easier.
Many longboards are made to get the maximum speed in downhill racing. The longboard’s deck is usually thick and less flexible to maintain stability.
3. Trucks and Wheels
Of course, both skateboards and longboards have wheels, but the base they are attached is called a track. Both boards look and operate differently. In the case of skateboarding, the track is rigid and narrow, so it is easy to grind and land on your favorite trick. It is also the same size as the maximum width of the skateboard deck.
Long-boarded trucks are more flexible and provide a smoother ride. It is perfect for longboarders who want to enjoy long cruises and downhill races. Long-board trucks are wide and usually range from 150 to 180 millimeters.
For faster and smoother riding, the longboard wheels are large and soft. Skateboards have small, hard wheels to shred rails, shelves, and gaps. If you cruise on a board, soft wheels will make riding smoother and more coordinated.
4. Balance
If you want to learn new tricks but you’ve never ridden on a skateboard before, try a longboard first. The longboard is large and stable, so it is easy to balance. Once you’re confident with your longboard, switch to a skateboard and self-teach yourself how to balance well on a small board.

Longboards
Pros
First, let’s look at the advantages of longboards. Unlike most skateboards, longboards are 33-60 inches long and have a large and soft wheel, making them comfortable and stable. Longboards are a great option for beginners because of these features, and they are more tolerant and easier to ride than standard skateboards. Longboards are big and soft, making them a great choice for skateboarders who want to use them mainly for cruising and carrying.
Disadvantages
Longboards have their faults as well. Longboards often lack the agility and reactivity of a typical skateboard. This is one of the biggest drawbacks of longboards. Also, longboards are heavier than typical skateboards and are harder to store and carry, which may be disadvantageous for those who need to carry them.
Skateboards
Benefits
Now, let’s examine the benefits of traditional skateboarding. Traditional skateboards are often more compact, with a deck length of 28-33 inches. The width of the truck is narrow, and a small and durable wheel characterizes it. With greater agility and responsiveness than longboards, traditional skateboarding is a great option for riders interested in mastering tricks and tricks. Traditional skateboarding is a particularly good option for riders who want to use skateboarding on street skates and skateparks because of its small size and tough wheels.
Disadvantages
The disadvantage of classic skateboarding is that it is difficult for beginners to ride it because it is small and hard to wheel. Due to these characteristics, moving from point A to point B takes time, and the difficulty level becomes higher. In addition, compared to longboards, they generally lack stability and are not practical for transfers and long-distance cruising.
Finally wards
There is no objective “best longboard” or solid answer to whether a longboard or a skateboard is better, but I hope this guide has provided enough insight to make a subjective choice based on what you do.
After all, since each component is upgradeable, you can start with a standard ice candy skateboard and transform it into a hybrid board that can shred the sidewalk or hit the lamp at any time with soft wheels. But in that case, watch out for the Weilbytes!
